The ‘Reply Guy’ Strategy

Switching things back up and coming back to social selling on X. As I’ve previously mentioned, following the right accounts and being strategic on socials is key in leveraging X in your sales process. Let’s dive deeper into one of the best strategies to leverage on this platform.

There’s a common phrase used to describe someone who is either always the first to reply or will reply to anything. We call this person the ‘Reply Guy’. Interestingly enough, being a ‘Reply Guy’ isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You can leverage this strategy to your advantage in the sales process. The key differentiator, which you’ll need to nail, is replying with truly valuable content.

For example, there’s a key difference in effort here:

Super excited for this, would love to connect

And here:

I am by no means an astrophysicist nor am I in the process of becoming one, but this is intriguing.

Are you aiming to make the frontier an educational experience for people who can't or haven't yet entered the field? (of course, on top of the fun!)

Out of the two, it’s quite obvious to guess which got a reply. Showing real interest, and asking great questions is how you get results.

There are multiple flavors to being a ‘Reply Guy’ as well. Helping an account with free exposure is one of them, and you can easily build a relationship with your prospect by building content for them over time. A great example of this is posting what I like to call ‘bullish content’. Take key highlights from the prospect’s business (what they’ve done, the team’s background, what’s next etc.) and condense them into a 5-6 post long X thread.

I did this for a prospect some time ago, and not only was I able to get a response from them in an existing email thread but I also gained a few followers because they decided to augment the post with their main account.

Make sure to tag them in your content! The moral of the story is, to stand out from the noise you need to show your prospects you’re taking the time to learn about their business and therefore can provide key insights on what to improve. With most decision-makers being on social media, there’s no better place to show them what you know than social.
